Actress Karisma Kapoor’s children, Samaira and Kiaan, are in a legal battle over their late father Sunjay Kapur’s estate. Sunjay, a businessman, passed away earlier this year. The children have filed a suit against his widow, Priya Sachdev Kapur, seeking their rightful share of the assets.
Key Parties Involved
- Priya Sachdev Kapur – Sunjay’s widow and mother of their son.
- Karisma Kapoor – Sunjay’s ex-wife and mother of Samaira and Kiaan.
- Samaira and Kiaan Kapoor – Karisma and Sunjay’s children, plaintiffs in the case.
- Rani Kapur – Sunjay’s 80-year-old mother and class 1 legal heir, also a defendant, concerned about her rights in the family trust.
The Dispute Over the Will
The children allege that Priya Kapur forged a will dated March 21, months before Sunjay’s death. They claim the will was introduced suddenly and read under suspicious circumstances, with the executor learning about it only a day before. It was reportedly presented by a family employee rather than the family.
Court Orders and Proceedings
The Delhi High Court has directed Priya to submit a complete list of Sunjay Kapur’s movable and immovable assets and respond to the allegations. The next hearing, including a request for an interim injunction, is scheduled for October 9.
Rani Kapur’s Concerns
Sunjay’s mother, Rani Kapur, has raised objections, stating that her rights in the family trust were overlooked after Priya’s marriage to Sunjay. She also claims that shares of Sona Comstar, valued at Rs 500 crore, were sold to a foreign entity without her knowledge. Her lawyer emphasized that the core dispute is between Karisma and Priya but that Rani will file her formal response in court.
Priya Kapur’s Response
Represented by Senior Advocate Rajiv Nayar, Priya denied the allegations, stating the suit is not maintainable. She highlighted that the children were already beneficiaries of the trust and had received Rs 1,900 crore just days before filing the case. Nayar added, “It’s not as if these people are left on the streets. I am a widow with a six-year-old child. For 15 years, they were nowhere to be seen.”
What the Children Seek
Samaira and Kiaan are requesting partition of the estate, a full account of the assets, and an injunction preventing the defendants from dealing with the estate until the matter is resolved.
Ongoing Stakes and Strategic Concerns
The case also touches on broader family trust management and control over company shares. Rani Kapur has urged the court to maintain the status quo over the estate until all claims are settled.
