Following the success of the Kochi Water Metro, the central government is preparing to introduce similar water-based urban transit systems in 18 to 20 additional cities across India. Systra India has been tasked with conducting feasibility studies for these upcoming projects.

Comprehensive Feasibility Studies
Shri Hari Somalraju, Managing Director of Systra, highlighted that the Kochi project has set a benchmark for water metro solutions in the country. The forthcoming studies will not only cover technical assessments but also examine travel demand, mobility patterns, and the broader socio-economic benefits of integrating water transport into urban mobility.
Focus on Integration and Sustainability
The studies will emphasize seamless integration of water transport with existing urban transit systems while minimizing ecological impact. The consultancy will evaluate potential routes, plan terminal facilities, and design operational frameworks to ensure reliable and commuter-friendly services.
Systra’s Ongoing Role in Indian Infrastructure
Systra is already a key player in India’s metro sector, serving as general consultant for the second phase of Kochi Metro. The company has also signed an MoU with Vizag Metro to assist APMRCL in planning, design, and construction supervision of the Visakhapatnam metro rail project.
