Saudi Arabia has successfully carried out its first official drone-based parcel delivery trial in Jeddah, marking a significant step toward modernizing the Kingdom’s logistics infrastructure. The experiment used unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for postal services, demonstrating faster, safer, and more sustainable delivery solutions.

Strategic Collaboration Between Authorities

The trial was conducted under the supervision of Dr. Rumaih Al-Rumaih, Vice Minister of Transport and Logistic Services and Acting President of the Transport General Authority (TGA). It was jointly executed by the General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) and the TGA.

  • GACA handled aviation operations and ensured compliance with air safety standards.
  • TGA oversaw regulatory aspects of the postal sector and facilitated supportive legislation.

This collaboration reflects Saudi Arabia’s broader approach to integrating advanced technologies into the transport and logistics ecosystem.

Alignment with Vision 2030

Dr. Al-Rumaih described the trial as a “significant leap” for parcel delivery infrastructure. The project demonstrates progress toward Vision 2030, the Kingdom’s strategic plan to diversify the economy and modernize services through digital transformation.

Officials highlighted that drone delivery could:

  • Reduce delivery times
  • Improve operational efficiency
  • Support sustainability
  • Enhance adaptability to changing consumer and technological needs

Aviation Safety and Regulatory Readiness

Captain Suleiman Al-Muheimidi, Executive VP for Aviation Safety at GACA, emphasized that the trial benefits from robust aviation safety frameworks. Recent updates to drone regulations align Saudi Arabia with global standards, including the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). These measures ensure safe and effective UAV operations across the Kingdom.

Future Outlook

Officials indicated that the trial is just the first phase. Plans for scaling include:

  • Wider deployment of drones in urban and rural areas
  • New regulatory frameworks for commercial drone operations
  • Partnerships with private logistics operators to expand services

By integrating drone technology into its postal network, Saudi Arabia is positioning itself as a regional leader in logistics innovation, emphasizing speed, sustainability, and technological advancement in line with Vision 2030.
