Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw inaugurated India’s first tempered glass manufacturing facility in Noida on Saturday. The plant has been set up by Optiemus Infracom in partnership with US-based Corning, a leading materials technology company.
Partnership with Corning for Mobile Glass Production
The factory will produce tempered glass used as protective layers on mobile phone screens. Vaishnaw said that by the end of this year, production of “covered glass” with Corning’s technology will also begin at the facility. He called Optiemus “a new gem” in the country’s fast-growing electronics ecosystem.
Investment and Capacity Plans
Optiemus has invested ₹70 crore in the Noida facility, which will have an annual capacity of 2.5 crore units and create over 600 direct jobs. In the second phase, the company plans to scale up capacity to 20 crore units annually for both domestic and global markets, with an additional ₹800 crore investment.
Electronics Manufacturing Growth in India
Vaishnaw highlighted that electronics manufacturing in India has grown six times in the last 11 years. Production has reached ₹11.5 lakh crore, with exports crossing ₹3 lakh crore. The sector has also generated direct and indirect employment for around 25 lakh people.
Focus on Research and Design
The minister urged Optiemus to expand its research team from 40 to 400, stressing that design and development will be a core strength for India’s electronics manufacturing sector in the coming years. He noted that the ecosystem is developing rapidly and value addition is improving step by step
