The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved India’s bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, selecting Ahmedabad as the proposed host city. The government highlighted the city’s world-class stadiums, advanced training facilities, and strong sporting culture as reasons for its selection.

IOA Backing and Next Steps
The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) had earlier cleared the proposal after an Expression of Interest was submitted in March. The bid, which must be filed by August 31, is expected to be finalized by IOA within the next two days. The Commonwealth Sport General Assembly will announce the host city in November in Glasgow.
Global Context and Chances of Winning
India last hosted the CWG in 2010. With Canada recently withdrawing from the race due to budget issues, India’s chances of securing the 2030 edition have improved significantly.
Key Infrastructure in Place
Ahmedabad already boasts the Narendra Modi Stadium, the largest cricket stadium in the world, which successfully hosted the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup Final. Work is also underway at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave, which will include a football stadium, aquatics centre, and multiple indoor arenas.
Link to 2036 Olympic Ambition
This bid is part of a larger vision. Ahmedabad is also the frontrunner for India’s proposed 2036 Olympic Games bid. Upgrading sporting infrastructure in the city is seen as an investment toward both events.
Economic and Social Impact
According to the government, hosting the CWG would bring benefits beyond sports. It is expected to generate revenue, boost tourism, create jobs, and open opportunities in fields like sports science, event management, logistics, media, and technology.
Boosting National Pride
The government also emphasized the symbolic value of hosting the Games. It believes the event will foster national unity, inspire young athletes to take up sports as a career, and provide a shared sense of pride for the country.
Full Sporting Roster Planned
Unlike the 2026 Games in Glasgow, which will have a reduced lineup, India plans to feature all major disciplines if selected for 2030. The IOA has stated that medal-rich sports such as shooting, wrestling, and archery will be included, along with traditional Indian games like kabaddi and kho kho.
