Banaras Locomotive Works (BLW) in Varanasi has commissioned India’s first removable solar panel system fitted between railway tracks. The 70-metre-long pilot project uses 28 solar panels with a total capacity of 15 kWp. The initiative marks a significant step towards sustainable railway operations.

Boosting Railways’ Net-Zero Vision

The project aligns with Indian Railways’ target of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2030. If deployed widely, the technology could generate nearly 321,000 kWh of electricity per kilometre every year, strengthening the push for clean energy in transport.

Design for Flexibility

The solar modules are mounted directly on the concrete sleepers using epoxy resin, with rubber padding to absorb shocks and vibrations from passing trains. This design ensures the system does not interfere with train movement.

Easy Removal and Maintenance

One of the system’s key strengths is its removable nature. Panels can be detached when maintenance or repair work is required, ensuring train services remain unaffected.

Scalable Potential

Railway officials believe the concept can be scaled up across the network, creating a significant renewable energy source without needing additional land.

Ministry’s Announcement

The Ministry of Railways announced the achievement on August 18, 2025, calling it a “historic first” for Indian Railways in the journey towards greener transport.

Industry Recognition Ahead

Metro Rail News, marking its decade of coverage, will honour projects like this at the Metro Rail News Awards on September 19 in New Delhi, recognising outstanding contributions across the rail transit sector.
