In a proud moment for India and Punjab’s heritage tourism, Ran Baas, The Palace in Patiala has been named one of the World’s Most Beautiful Hotels of 2025 by the UNESCO-backed Prix Versailles, an international architecture and design award series. Among 16 exceptional hotels selected across five continents, Ran Baas is India’s only entry on the prestigious list.
Once a neglected royal guesthouse within the historic Qila Mubarak complex, Ran Baas is now Punjab’s first palace hotel, thanks to an ambitious restoration led by renowned conservation architect Abha Narain Lambah, supported by Apeejay Surrendra Park Hotels and Priya Paul. The project is a blend of Mughal, Sikh, Rajput, and Colonial architectural styles, brought to life with luxury, elegance, and modern sensibilities.
From Ruins to Regal
After lying abandoned for 80 years post-Independence, Ran Baas was revived starting in 2014 through a government-led initiative. In 2021, the spotlight shifted to restoring this section of the Qila Mubarak complex, ultimately transforming it into a luxury heritage hotel with 35 exquisitely restored suites. Today, the hotel forms part of the Relais & Châteaux network, a hallmark of global excellence in hospitality.
Where Heritage Meets Hospitality
Designed to offer a royal yet contemporary stay, Ran Baas features modern amenities like a spa set in the former royal kitchens, dining in the old throne hall, and an immersive cultural experience rooted in Punjabi tradition.
Guests can:
- Dine at Neel, the all-day restaurant serving world cuisine with local warmth
- Unwind at The Patiala, a bar inspired by Punjab’s festive spirit
- Enjoy live traditional music, dance, and themed events in a setting that echoes royal grandeur
Architectural Honour with Cultural Impact
According to Prix Versailles Secretary General Jérôme Gouadain, this year’s awards reflect “deep collaboration between designers and regions” to promote “intelligent sustainability,” where culture and environment go hand in hand. The list celebrates architectural brilliance, local craftsmanship, and cultural preservation, qualities that Ran Baas embodies perfectly.
With this honour, Ran Baas joins an elite group of global properties that redefine luxury through restoration and regional identity, setting a benchmark for future heritage tourism in India.
