Dr. Azad Moopen, Padma Shri awardee and Founder-Chairman of Aster DM Healthcare, has launched the Dr. Moopen’s Legacy Scholarship and Fellowships Programme to support academically bright students from financially disadvantaged backgrounds. The initiative will benefit students seeking admission to Dr. Moopen’s Medical College, Nursing College, and College of Pharmacy in Wayanad, Kerala.
First Full-Tuition Medical Scholarship by a Private College in Kerala
This programme marks a major milestone in Kerala’s private medical education sector. For the first time, a private medical college is offering a 100% tuition fee waiver to deserving students. The goal is to improve access to high-quality medical education for students who might otherwise be unable to afford it.
Scholarships for MBBS, Nursing, and Pharmacy Students
A total of 25 students will be awarded scholarships each year—including 5 MBBS, 10 BSc Nursing, and 10 BPharm students.
- MBBS scholarships will be awarded strictly on the basis of academic merit, especially top performance in NEET.
- Nursing and BPharm scholarships will be based on a mix of academic excellence and financial need.
To remain eligible, students must maintain minimum academic performance and comply with the programme’s guidelines.
Long-Term Impact and Financial Commitment
The programme is set to benefit 125 students over five years, with the annual financial commitment exceeding ₹3 crore. It reflects Dr. Moopen’s broader vision of using education to uplift individuals and communities, particularly in critical fields like healthcare.
A Vision Rooted in Equity and Inclusion
Speaking on the launch, Dr. Moopen stated, “Education is the foundation of a stronger and more inclusive society. No capable student should miss the chance to pursue healthcare education due to economic barriers.” He added that this initiative is not only about funding education but creating life-changing opportunities for students, families, and entire communities.
Building on a Legacy of Service
Established in 2012, Dr. Moopen’s Medical College is the first medical college in a hilly, tribal district of Kerala. The institution aims to address the healthcare gap in remote areas and encourage tribal and local youth to pursue careers in medicine. With over 900 young doctors trained, the college continues to serve as a hub of accessible medical education, supported by skilled faculty and modern facilities including a library, museum, and tertiary care hospital.
