Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarks on a significant two-day state visit to the Maldives starting today, at the invitation of President Mohamed Muizzu. The visit holds strategic importance, not only as the first head of government visit under Muizzu’s presidency, but also in the broader context of regional diplomacy and India’s Neighbourhood First and MAHASAGAR (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions) policies.
PM Modi arrives at Velana International Airport at approximately 9:40 AM IST on July 25, and will serve as the guest of honour at the Maldives’ 60th Independence Day celebrations on July 26.
“This visit is of special significance as it is the first state visit hosted by President Muizzu since taking office in November 2023,” said Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri.

Strengthening Ties with a Key Maritime Partner
The Maldives remains a critical partner in India’s maritime and regional strategic vision. As part of this evolving relationship, Modi’s agenda includes:
- High-level bilateral talks with President Muizzu
- Inauguration of India-assisted development projects across the island nation
- Signing of several Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) to advance cooperation
G. Balasubramanian, India’s High Commissioner to the Maldives, confirmed that multiple agreements will be inked during the visit, covering sectors like economic collaboration, infrastructure, health, energy, and maritime security.
Foreign Secretary Misri further highlighted the India-Maldives joint vision for a Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership, finalized last year, which continues to guide bilateral cooperation.
As geopolitical dynamics shift in the Indian Ocean Region, PM Modi’s visit reflects India’s steadfast commitment to its island neighbour, reinforcing shared goals in security, economic growth, and regional stability.
