Lufthansa Technik has expanded its presence in India through a deeper partnership with IndiGo, one of the country’s largest airlines. As part of long-term maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) agreements, Lufthansa Technik will provide comprehensive lease return support for a significant number of IndiGo’s Airbus A320 family aircraft. The agreement covers both base maintenance and single component services.
Context of Turkish Technic Controversy
This move comes in the backdrop of ongoing controversy over IndiGo’s ties with Turkish Technic amid India’s Operation Sindoor and Turkey’s open support for Pakistan. IndiGo had earlier signed a deal with Turkish Technic in February 2025 to conduct redelivery checks for over 10 A320 aircraft. However, the lease for three widebody B777 aircraft from Turkish Airlines is now ending, with the Indian government deciding not to extend it beyond August 31, 2025. Against this tense backdrop, the deal with Lufthansa Technik is viewed as strategically significant.
Global Maintenance Support from Lufthansa Technik
To meet IndiGo’s demands for efficiency and reliability, Lufthansa Technik will carry out base maintenance services at its facilities in Sofia (Bulgaria) and the Philippines. Additionally, its Hamburg workshop will handle single component maintenance, ensuring timely execution of lease return processes and operational readiness.
IndiGo’s Rapid Fleet Growth
IndiGo is managing one of the fastest-growing fleets globally, adding nearly one new aircraft each week. Its current fleet includes hundreds of Airbus A320 and A321 aircraft, and wet- and damp-leased aircraft continue to be a key part of its operational model. To handle this growth and maintain flexibility, IndiGo relies on trusted partners like Lufthansa Technik, known for its efficiency in managing aircraft lease returns worldwide.
Focus on Leased Aircraft Amid Supply Chain Challenges
Parichay Datta, Senior Vice President of Engineering and Maintenance at IndiGo, highlighted the importance of leased aircraft during supply chain disruptions. “Leases have proven invaluable in helping us meet demand and maintain our strong market position. We’re excited to expand our partnership with Lufthansa Technik,” he said.
Lufthansa Technik Confident in Ongoing Partnership
Johanna Koch, Vice President Corporate Sales for Southeast Asia and the Indian Subcontinent at Lufthansa Technik, said, “IndiGo’s rapid growth presents unique challenges. We are proud to support them with our global expertise and proven turnaround performance. These contracts reflect IndiGo’s trust in us as a reliable MRO provider.”
This extended partnership marks another step in Lufthansa Technik’s ongoing expansion into India’s aviation maintenance sector, supporting one of the world’s most dynamic airline operations.
