Jagdeep Dhankhar surprised the nation by resigning from the post of Vice President on the first day of Parliament’s Monsoon Session. He cited health concerns as the reason, although the Congress party claimed deeper reasons behind the move. Following his resignation, the Election Commission of India has begun preparations for the upcoming Vice Presidential election.
Entitlements as Former Vice President
Despite stepping down, Dhankhar will continue to receive several benefits under the Vice President’s Pension Act. These include:
- Government Accommodation: He will be allotted a Type VIII government bungalow, likely in Lutyens’ Delhi.
- Monthly Pension: Based on the 2018 Budget, which raised the Vice President’s annual salary to ₹48 lakh, Dhankhar is expected to receive over ₹2 lakh per month as pension—equivalent to 50–60% of his former salary.
- Travel Privileges: He can travel anywhere in India by air, rail, or steamer in the highest class, along with his spouse, companion, or a relative, free of charge.
- Healthcare Access: He will be eligible for free medical care and the services of a personal doctor.
Staff and Utilities Provided
Additional benefits include two personal assistants for Dhankhar and a private secretary for his wife. The government will also cover utility bills such as electricity and water for their allotted residence.
Packing Underway
Sources have confirmed that Dhankhar and his family have started preparing to vacate the Vice President’s Enclave in New Delhi. They are expected to shift soon to their new government-provided bungalow.
Election Commission Moves Ahead
With the Vice President’s post now vacant, the Election Commission of India has begun making necessary arrangements for the election. Details regarding the poll schedule are expected to be announced shortly.
