SunTV expands global sports footprint with Northern Superchargers acquisition
SunTV Network, one of India’s largest media companies, is set to expand its global presence in sports by acquiring London-based cricket franchise Northern Superchargers Ltd for £100 million (approximately ₹1,000 crore). Upon completion, the acquisition will make Northern Superchargers a wholly owned subsidiary of the Chennai-headquartered SunTV Network.
The Northern Superchargers are part of The Hundred, a unique limited-overs cricket league organized by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). This strategic move marks SunTV’s entry into the UK sports market.
SunTV already owns two other prominent cricket franchises: Sunrisers Hyderabad, a team in the Indian Premier League (IPL) operated by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), and SunRisers Eastern Cape in South Africa’s SA20 league, managed by Cricket South Africa.
“We are enhancing our global footprint in sports and are investing in a club that is part of ‘The Hundred’, a cricket league for limited-overs cricket promoted by the England and Wales Cricket Board,” SunTV said in an official statement.
The company further highlighted that the foreign entity being acquired is already profitable, adding: “With growing global interest, The Hundred is poised for greater financial success.”
Financial Snapshot Northern Superchargers reported a turnover of £1.89 million (₹21.98 crore). Meanwhile, SunTV’s shares on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) were trading at ₹590.5, up 2.6% at the time of the announcement.
This acquisition reinforces SunTV’s commitment to expanding its international sports portfolio and strengthening its position as a global media and sports powerhouse.
