New Lightweight Wheelchair from IIT Madras

IIT Madras has introduced YD One, a new active wheelchair that weighs just nine kilograms, making it the lightest of its kind developed in India. It offers full customisation based on body size, posture, and mobility needs, providing improved comfort and freedom for daily use.

IIT Madras YD One Wheelchair

Affordable Compared to Imports

Priced at ₹74,700, YD One offers a cost-effective solution when compared to imported wheelchairs with similar features, which cost over ₹2.5 lakhs. The design focuses on strength, energy efficiency, and ease of lifting and storing in vehicles and public transport.

Built with Advanced Materials

To reduce the weight, a team of researchers from IIT Madras used a carbon fibre and aluminium composite. Experts from departments such as mechanical and metallurgy engineering worked together to create a durable and lightweight frame using aerospace-grade materials.

Better Alternative to Hospital-Style Chairs

YD One replaces the commonly used heavy, hospital-style wheelchairs designed for short-term indoor use. These older models often need external help and limit user mobility. YD One is built for independent, long-term use with improved ergonomics.

Led by Expert Researchers

The project is led by Sujatha Srinivasan, head of the TTK Centre for Rehabilitation Research and Device Development at IIT Madras. She noted that their wheelchair designs are gaining attention in global markets due to their quality and unique features.

Manufactured by Startup Thryv Mobility

To bring the product to users, IIT Madras partnered with Thryv Mobility, a startup incubated at the institute. The startup will produce the wheelchairs locally while meeting international quality standards, making it accessible to users in India and other developing countries.

CSR Initiative for Free Distribution

The first 20 units of YD One will be provided to deserving users with the support of the Trimble CSR initiative, allowing the product to reach those who need it most in the early phase.
