GM Rao, originally from a small town in Andhra Pradesh, envisioned great success during India’s economic liberalization. Through hard work and determination, he transformed that vision into reality, becoming a leading figure in India’s infrastructure sector.

Founder of GMR Group

GM Rao is the Founder Chairman of the GMR Group, a major player in global infrastructure with interests spanning energy, transportation, and airports. Educated as a mechanical engineer, he has grown into a billionaire industrialist whose projects impact multiple countries.

GMR’s Leadership in Indian Airports

GMR is one of India’s top private airport operators, alongside the Adani Group. The company manages key airports such as Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International, Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International, and Goa’s Manohar International Airport. The Hyderabad airport is notable as India’s largest by area, covering 5,500 acres.

Focus on Aviation Education

In 2024, GMR Group launched the GMR School of Aviation in Hyderabad, partnering with Airbus. This initiative aims to develop skilled aviation professionals and support the growth of India’s aviation industry.

Beyond Infrastructure: Sports and Wealth

GM Rao also owns a 50% stake in the IPL team Delhi Capitals, showing his interest in sports. According to Forbes 2024, Rao’s net worth stands at $3.99 billion, ranking him among India’s richest individuals.

Diverse Business Portfolio

The GMR Group’s operations include airports, energy, infrastructure, and enterprises. Together, these sectors generate annual revenues of over Rs 8,364 crore.

Expansion and Global Support

GMR is expanding with a Special Investment Region in Tamil Nadu and plans for 50 electric vehicle charging stations. In 2023, the group raised Rs 6,300 crore in debt funding from Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, reflecting strong international investor confidence.
