A British F-35B fighter jet, one of the most advanced stealth aircraft in the world, has been stranded for nearly a month at Thiruvananthapuram International Airport in Kerala following a hydraulic failure. The aircraft, valued at approximately $115 million, encountered the issue after being diverted to the airport during a routine sortie over the Arabian Sea. The jet was unable to return to the HMS Prince of Wales, the Royal Navy’s flagship aircraft carrier, due to bad weather and landed in Kerala on June 14.

UK Engineers Working on Repairs
The Lockheed Martin-manufactured aircraft is currently undergoing repairs by a team of British engineers. Indian officials, speaking anonymously, indicated that the repair work is progressing and the jet may be ready to fly back to the UK by next week.
Memes and Cartoons Take Over Social Media
The fighter jet’s prolonged stay in Kerala has inspired widespread social media humor, including AI-generated memes and cartoons. One post by Kerala Tourism showed the jet on the runway surrounded by coconut trees with a fictional five-star review praising the state. Kerala’s Tourism Director K. Biju described it as a light-hearted gesture to appreciate British tourists, who make up the largest share of foreign visitors to the state.
Another viral cartoon showed the jet enjoying local snacks with villagers, set against Kerala’s scenic landscape.
No Dismantling Plans, Says UK Government
There has been speculation that the jet might be dismantled and sent back in a cargo plane if repairs fail. However, the UK Ministry of Defence has denied such claims, stating that a repair team is already on-site to restore the aircraft’s functionality.
The British High Commission also confirmed the presence of the engineering team and assured ongoing efforts to ensure the aircraft’s safe return.
One of the World’s Most Advanced Jets
The F-35B is a short takeoff and vertical landing (STOVL) variant of the F-35 series and is known for its stealth capabilities and cutting-edge technology. The incident, while technical in nature, has become a moment of unexpected cultural connection and viral engagement between India and the UK.
