The redevelopment of Visakhapatnam Railway Station, a top-earning station under the East Coast Railway (ECoR), has finally resumed. Despite initial delays due to contractor-related issues, the station is set to be upgraded with 14 platforms, up from the current eight, to meet rising passenger demand.

Foundation Laid by Prime Minister Modi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the ₹456 crore redevelopment project on November 12, 2022. The redesigned station is expected to serve 75,000 passengers daily. Though construction began in early 2023, it was stalled after legal issues involving the previous contractor. The court has now ruled in favour of the Railways, clearing the way for progress.
Increase in Platforms to Ease Congestion
A revised Detailed Project Report (DPR) has been submitted to make Visakhapatnam Junction a terminal station with six additional platforms, major yard remodelling, and improved train movement. The long-standing demand for four more platforms has now expanded into a more comprehensive plan. According to officials, two of the six new platforms will serve Vande Bharat Express trains, which do not require engine reversal.
Vande Bharat Maintenance Hub Planned
Alongside the platform expansion, Visakhapatnam will also host a dedicated coach maintenance depot for Vande Bharat trains. This development is expected to boost the efficiency and operation of high-speed rail services in the region.
New Facilities Under Master Plan
The revised station master plan includes yard remodelling, additional escalators, and a new 12-meter-wide foot overbridge (FOB). These upgrades aim to modernise passenger experience and operational flow at the junction.
Top Revenue-Earning Station
Visakhapatnam Junction consistently topped ECoR in passenger revenue during 2021–22 and 2022–23, and remained in the top 20 across India in 2023–24. The new infrastructure will support its growing significance in the railway network. Conclusion
With the legal hurdles now cleared, the redevelopment project is expected to move quickly. Once completed, the expanded and modernised station will significantly improve travel infrastructure in Visakhapatnam and the surrounding regions.
