Mindtree co-founder Subroto Bagchi has shared a deeply personal story that highlights his belief in selfless service over material wealth. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Bagchi posted a photo of a ₹1 cheque issued by the State Bank of India—his final salary as Chief Advisor to the Government of Odisha for Institution and Capacity Building. For eight years, Bagchi served in this role, accepting only ₹1 per year as a symbolic gesture, never seeking monetary compensation.

A Humble Exit Marked by a Powerful Symbol
Bagchi described the cheque as his “biggest wealth,” stating that he had received one such cheque every year during his tenure, and this was his last. The post resonated widely across India, with many praising his humility and dedication. The ₹1 cheque, while financially insignificant, carried deep emotional and ethical weight for Bagchi—representing his belief that public service can be a fulfilling reward in itself.

From IT Leadership to Grounded Public Contribution
Bagchi is widely known as the co-founder of Mindtree, an IT and consulting firm with a global presence. Over the years, he and his wife Susmita have donated hundreds of crores to causes such as cancer care and skill development. Yet, despite such philanthropic impact and business success, Bagchi considers this ₹1 cheque the most valuable possession of his life.

A Contrast to Common Corporate Norms
While many corporate leaders take on advisory roles with high salaries, Bagchi’s approach stood out for its integrity. His involvement with the Odisha government was driven by purpose, not perks. His work was not a symbolic gesture for publicity, but a consistent and committed engagement rooted in service to his home state.

Public Response Praises Genuine Leadership
Bagchi’s post quickly went viral, drawing admiration from netizens. Many called him a rare figure in today’s world of public personalities, applauding his ethical values and commitment. Some users described his gesture as “a lotus in the mud of public virtue,” while others thanked him for being a role model for future generations in Odisha and beyond.

A Reminder of What True Wealth Means
The cheque may be small in amount, but its meaning is immense. It stands as a reminder that leadership is not about wealth or recognition, but about purpose and responsibility. Bagchi’s journey—from starting as a clerk in Odisha’s Industries Department to co-founding a billion-dollar tech company, and then returning to serve the state for a token salary—reflects a rare combination of ambition and humility.A Life Rooted in Service Over Status
Subroto Bagchi’s choice to value a ₹1 cheque over corporate earnings challenges the norms of success in today’s world. His story sends a clear message: public service with sincerity and integrity is still possible—and deeply meaningful.
