Starlink, the satellite internet venture by Elon Musk’s SpaceX, is officially entering the Indian market. The Government of India has granted an operating license to Starlink, marking a significant step toward bridging the digital divide in rural and underserved areas.
Union Minister for Communications and Development of the North Eastern Region, Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, confirmed the approval through an official post. With this development, Starlink becomes the third company authorized by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to provide satellite-based internet services in India — joining the ranks of Eutelsat OneWeb and Jio Satellite Communications. Amazon’s Project Kuiper remains in the approval pipeline.

Starlink aims to redefine connectivity by offering high-speed, low-latency internet directly from space. Unlike traditional satellite systems that rely on distant geostationary satellites, Starlink uses a massive constellation of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites positioned approximately 550 km above Earth, enabling faster and more reliable internet access.
Starlink’s India Plans: Pricing & Launch Details
According to reports, Starlink has finalized its pricing for India:
- Hardware Cost (Dish Kit): ₹33,000 (approx.)
- Monthly Unlimited Data Plan: ₹3,000
- Free 1-Month Trial: New users will receive a complimentary trial period with their device purchase to experience the service before committing to a monthly plan.
The launch is expected soon, with Starlink targeting remote, rural, and underserved areas first — markets where conventional broadband has limited reach.
Internet Speeds & Performance
Starlink offers download speeds ranging from 25 Mbps to 220 Mbps, with most users experiencing over 100 Mbps consistently. Its independence from ground infrastructure makes it particularly well-suited for areas with limited internet connectivity options.
