Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced the introduction of 50 new Namo Bharat trains and 100 new Mainline Electric Multiple Units (MEMUs). These are intended to improve short-distance travel across India. The new trains are part of Indian Railways’ plan to enhance passenger experience, especially for non-suburban routes.
About Namo Bharat Trains
The Namo Bharat train, previously called the Vande Metro, is a self-propelled, fully air-conditioned train based on the Vande Bharat platform. Designed for shorter inter-city journeys, it offers premium travel options for regular passengers. Each 12-coach train can carry 1,150 seated and 2,058 standing passengers.

Key Features and Performance
Namo Bharat trains are built for speeds up to 130 kmph. They include sealed gangways for smooth movement between coaches, automatic doors, and advanced acceleration and braking systems. These trains are expected to gradually replace existing MEMUs for better efficiency.
Enhanced Passenger Comfort
These trains come with large sealed panoramic windows, roller blinds, and comfortable seating. Each coach has modular toilets with vacuum-based systems, mobile charging points, and full air-conditioning.
Focus on Safety and Technology
Namo Bharat trains include the KAVACH anti-collision system, CCTV surveillance, and emergency communication units to ensure passenger safety.
MEMUs for Wider Reach
In addition to the Namo Bharat fleet, Indian Railways will also manufacture 100 new MEMUs with 16-20 coaches each to cater to high-demand, short-distance routes.
With these new trains, Indian Railways aims to modernize short-distance travel, offering better speed, safety, and comfort to lakhs of daily passengers.
