Sunny Varkey, the billionaire founder of GEMS Education, is embarking on an ambitious journey to elevate his network of schools to unparalleled heights. With a planned investment of $300 million over the next three years, GEMS Education is set to enhance its presence, particularly in the UAE, by introducing cutting-edge facilities and curricula that emphasize innovation and entrepreneurship.
A centerpiece of this initiative is the upcoming GEMS School of Research and Innovation in Dubai, slated to open in August 2025. This institution will feature advanced amenities, including a rooftop football field that doubles as a helipad, a 600-seat professional-grade auditorium, and an Olympic-sized swimming pool. The school aims to provide a holistic education experience, integrating AI technologies and fostering an environment conducive to research and innovation.

Furthermore, GEMS Education has launched the ‘Next Billion Innovation’ startup fund, a $1 million initiative designed to support student entrepreneurs in developing solutions with global impact. This fund will initially be accessible to students at the new School of Research and Innovation, offering them mentorship and pathways to global startup ecosystems.
Varkey’s vision extends beyond infrastructure. He emphasizes the importance of instilling family values within the educational framework, aligning with the UAE’s ‘Family First’ agenda. By integrating these values into the curriculum, GEMS aims to nurture well-rounded individuals prepared to lead and innovate in a rapidly evolving world.
