Israel has become the first country in the world to deploy high-powered laser weapons to intercept enemy drones in an actual war scenario. The Israeli Air Force (IAF) used these laser systems during the ongoing “Swords of Iron” conflict in Gaza, marking a major leap in modern military technology.
Developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems
The laser weapons were developed by Rafael, a prominent Israeli defence firm. These energy-based weapons target enemy drones using intense beams of light that generate heat, damaging or destroying them mid-air.

High Interception Rates in Gaza Conflict
According to Rafael, the Aerial Defense Array of the Israeli Air Force successfully deployed the laser systems in battlefield conditions, achieving a high interception rate. These interceptions reportedly prevented harm to civilians and helped safeguard strategic national assets.
Historic Achievement Confirmed by Military Leadership
Brigadier General Yehuda Elmakayes, head of the defence ministry’s research wing, confirmed the system’s success in actual combat. He stated that lessons learned from these tests are now being integrated into the next phase of development for laser-based protection systems.
Live Video Shows Drone Neutralization
Israel’s Ministry of Defense released footage of the laser in action, showing successful interception of enemy UAVs. In one case, the beam ignited a drone’s wing, causing it to catch fire and crash. The intercepted drones resembled the crucifix-shaped UAVs typically used by Hamas, Hezbollah, and Iran-backed Houthi groups.
Operational Success of ‘Magen Or’ System
During the recent northern sector operations, the Israeli Defense Forces tested the “Magen Or” (Shield of Light) laser interception system. It successfully downed several drones, including four launched by Hezbollah. These field trials demonstrated the laser’s combat readiness and operational capability.
Part of a Larger Strategy with Iron Beam Network
The laser system is expected to complement Israel’s upcoming “Iron Beam” air defence network. Military analysts note that laser weapons offer a cost-effective solution for neutralizing inexpensive drone threats, reducing dependence on expensive missile interceptors.
