The Kochi Water Metro has proven to be a successful and popular mode of transport since its launch in April 2023. In just two years, it has carried over 40 lakh passengers, with boats operating at full capacity. The service offers a cost-effective and eco-friendly alternative to traditional transport options.
Expansion Plans Across India
Loknath Behera, Managing Director of Kochi Water Metro, revealed that the central government aims to introduce similar Water Metro systems in 21 other locations across the country. Cities identified for possible implementation include Goa, Ahmedabad, Srinagar, Lakshadweep, and Guwahati. A feasibility study for Mumbai has already been completed, with studies ongoing in other regions.

Advantages of Water Metro
The Water Metro system is noted for being less polluting and cheaper compared to metro rail projects. Currently, Kochi Metro operates with 20 electric boats and plans to expand its fleet to 78. These boats are manufactured by the Cochin Shipyard, though production takes time.
Future Challenges and Cooperation Needed
Launching Water Metro services in other cities will involve challenges, including coordination with state governments. However, with feasibility studies in progress, there is optimism that Kochi-like water transport systems could be operational in multiple Indian cities within the next three to four years.
