Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled Indian Railways’ first 9,000 horsepower electric locomotive engine in Dahod, Gujarat. The new facility is part of the ‘Make in India’ initiative and is designed to produce up to 150 locomotives annually, starting with a base capacity of 120.

High-Capacity, Eco-Friendly Engines
These new locomotives are capable of pulling 4,600 tonnes of freight and will significantly enhance the cargo transport capacity of Indian Railways. The engines use regenerative braking and energy-efficient systems, aligning with India’s push for sustainable infrastructure.

Major Investment and Job Creation
The Dahod plant was built with an investment of ₹21,405 crore. It is expected to manufacture 1,200 electric locomotives over the next decade. The facility is also set to generate employment for around 10,000 people and contribute to the local economy.

Part of a Larger Gujarat Tour
PM Modi’s visit to Dahod is part of a two-day tour of Gujarat covering Dahod, Bhuj, and Gandhinagar. He will inaugurate multiple development projects across the state, with a combined value exceeding ₹24,000 crore. From Vision to Reality in 3 Years
The foundation stone for the Dahod workshop was laid in 2022. In just three years, the plant is now fully operational, producing high-horsepower engines for both domestic use and export, strengthening India’s railway infrastructure.
