BEL’s Akashteer and IACCS Boost India’s Air Defense

Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) is set to secure ₹27,000 crore in new orders, leveraging its pivotal role and advanced defense technologies like Akashteer and IDDIS during Operation Sindoor. This surge in contracts is expected to significantly enhance India's air defense and overall military strength, with projections of total orders exceeding ₹50,000 crore this fiscal year.

Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) has become a vital player in India’s national security following the recent border conflict with Pakistan. Its homegrown defense technologies were crucial during Operation Sindoor, enhancing India’s military strength.

Surge in Orders and Financial Growth

BEL’s financial outlook has improved sharply due to the conflict. Manoj Jain, Chairman and Managing Director of BEL, announced that the company expects to receive multiple contracts under the emergency procurement plan approved for the Indian Armed Forces after Operation Sindoor. Jain said the company anticipates 8 to 10 new orders soon, with clearer details expected within a week.

BEL projects an additional Rs 27,000 crore in orders this year. If the Quick Reaction Surface to Air Missile (QRSAM) contract is secured, the total orders for the year could surpass Rs 50,000 crore. For fiscal year 2026, BEL expects orders to exceed Rs 57,000 crore. As of April 2025, BEL’s order book stood at Rs 71,650 crore.

Role in Project Kusha and Multi-Force Engagement

BEL confirmed involvement in Project Kusha, India’s indigenous alternative to the Russian S-400 air defense system. This system was key in protecting Indian airspace during the border conflict. BEL is engaged in discussions with the Army, Navy, and Air Force regarding various projects, expecting further orders under emergency procurement.

Key Defense Systems That Shone During Operation Sindoor

Akashteer Air Defence System
BEL signed a Rs 2,000-crore contract for Akashteer, an in-house designed air defense system that performed exceptionally in real combat conditions along the borders. The system integrates radars and weapons to provide a unified air defense picture, greatly enhancing operational awareness and reducing the risk of friendly fire. The Defence Ministry praised Akashteer as a key asset in intelligent warfare, enabling coordinated detection and engagement of enemy aircraft and missiles.

Integrated Drone Detection & Interdiction System (IDDIS)
BEL’s laser-based anti-drone system played a significant role in neutralizing multiple Pakistani drones during Operation Sindoor. The system offers real-time detection, tracking, and neutralization of small drones, providing detailed optical and thermal data.

HAMMER Precision-Guided Munitions
In partnership with French defense company Safran, BEL manufactures HAMMER bombs in India. These precision-guided weapons combine conventional bombs with advanced navigation and guidance systems. With ranges from 15 to 70 kilometers and various payload sizes, HAMMER is effective in mountainous and urban combat zones.

Advanced Light-Weight Torpedo (ALWT) “Shyena”
Produced by BEL and developed by the Naval Science and Technological Laboratory, this torpedo offers high speed and precision tracking of submarines using advanced acoustic homing. It features powerful warheads and an innovative seawater-activated battery.

Battlefield Surveillance Radar – Short Range (BFSR-SR)
A man-portable radar developed by DRDO and produced by BEL, BFSR-SR detects and tracks moving targets including vehicles and helicopters. Weighing just 27 kg, it is quickly deployable and can transfer target data remotely. It is widely used by the Indian Army for surveillance and intelligence.

Upgrades to Air Defence Guns
BEL has modernized legacy systems like the Russian ZSU-23-4M “Shilka” and the Swedish Bofors L/70 guns. Upgrades include advanced fire control systems, electro-optical sensors, and proximity-fuse ammunition to counter modern threats such as drones and light armored vehicles.

Additional Low-Level Radar Systems
Under the Defence Acquisition Council’s emergency procurement budget of Rs 40,000 crore, BEL is expected to secure contracts for new low-level radars designed for drone detection in field operations, supplementing previous orders.

Positioned for Future Growth

As India enhances its defense capabilities in response to border challenges, BEL stands well-prepared to benefit from increased military spending, backed by its proven technology and crucial role in Operation Sindoor.
