Chinese autonomous vehicle company WeRide has launched fully driverless robotaxi trials in Abu Dhabi, marking the first deployment of such services in the Middle East. The announcement was made on Friday, with WeRide confirming that the pilot phase will begin this quarter. The robotaxis will operate on public roads without a safety driver on board.
Commercial Rollout Expected in 2025
WeRide plans to gradually introduce commercial driverless ride services and expand coverage starting in the summer of 2025, subject to regulatory approvals. The company will include new high-demand areas such as Al Maryah Island and Al Reem Island in its service network.
Existing Presence in Abu Dhabi
WeRide has been operating autonomous services in Abu Dhabi since 2021, covering Yas Island, Saadiyat Island, and routes linked to Zayed International Airport. The upcoming expansion will further strengthen its presence in the capital.

Global Experience and Regional Commitment
WeRide has already launched eight fully autonomous ride-hailing routes running 24/7 in Guangzhou, China, making it the country’s first round-the-clock driverless robotaxi network in a major city. The company is leveraging this expertise as it broadens its reach in the UAE.
Quote from Leadership
Jennifer Li, WeRide’s CFO and Head of International Business, stated that the expansion to Al Maryah and Al Reem Islands will deliver smart mobility to more users in the region. She emphasized that the move showcases WeRide’s technological progress and supports its goal of large-scale commercial robotaxi deployment.
Background on Robotaxi Technology
Robotaxis use a combination of artificial intelligence, advanced sensors, and real-time mapping to drive and transport passengers without human input. The technology has been under development globally, with WeRide emerging as a key player in its practical application.
Official Authorization and Partnerships
In July 2023, WeRide became the first company to receive the UAE’s national license for autonomous driving, allowing public road trials across the country. In December 2024, the company partnered with Uber to launch a robotaxi ride-hailing service in Abu Dhabi—the largest commercial deployment of its kind outside China and the U.S.
Involvement in Regulatory Development
WeRide is also part of Abu Dhabi’s Smart and Autonomous Systems Council, contributing to infrastructure and policy development for autonomous transportation in the region.
Broader Developments in the UAE
While Abu Dhabi moves forward with WeRide’s driverless vehicles, Dubai is preparing to introduce its own self-driving electric taxi services starting from the first quarter of 2026, reflecting the UAE’s broader push towards futuristic urban mobility.
