Ethel Caterham, a 115-year-old woman from the UK, has become the world’s oldest living person, according to the Gerontology Research Group. Born on August 21, 1909, her life spans three centuries and countless global transformations.

Early Life and Global Experiences

Ethel was born in Shipton Bellinger, a village in southern England, as one of eight siblings. She worked as a nanny in India at the age of 18 and later lived in Hong Kong and Gibraltar after marrying British Army Major Norman Caterham. She returned to the UK, raised two daughters, and remained active even after her husband’s death in 1976.

Life Philosophy: No Arguments

Ethel credits her longevity to one simple rule: “Never argue with anyone. I listen and I do what I like.” Experts agree that avoiding stress and emotional conflict can significantly improve health and slow ageing.

Scientific Support for Her Approach

Medical research shows that emotional stability reduces inflammation, lowers the risk of chronic illnesses, and promotes a longer life. Ethel’s peaceful lifestyle aligns with these findings.

Recent Celebration and Legacy

She celebrated her 115th birthday at Hallmark Lakeview Care Home in Camberley with cake and a tiara. More than her age, Ethel is celebrated for her calm and positive way of life.

The Role of Happiness and Healthy Habits

Studies link happiness to better immunity, improved heart health, and longer life. Other key factors include staying hydrated, regular exercise, avoiding junk food, and making healthy lifestyle choices.

Simple Fitness at Home

Experts recommend home-friendly activities like walking in place, squats, lunges, and light stretching to stay active. The World Health Organisation advises at least 150 minutes of moderate activity weekly for adults.
