The White House is negotiating with Qatar’s royal family for the temporary use of a luxury Boeing 747-8 jet, which may serve as an interim Air Force One aircraft. Qatar confirmed discussions are underway but denied that the plane would be a gift. Officials described the transfer as being for “temporary use” and emphasized that legal reviews are ongoing.
Intended Future Use
According to CBS News, the plane could eventually be transferred to Donald Trump’s presidential library once his second term ends. The jet, considered a “flying palace”, is a newer model compared to the aging 747-200B planes currently in service since 1990-1991.

Trump’s Remarks and Diplomatic Context
Trump, expected to visit Qatar this week, referred to the aircraft as a “gift” in a Truth Social post. He framed the transaction as transparent and cost-effective, contrasting it with what he called excessive spending proposed by political opponents. Qatar and Trump have maintained a strong diplomatic relationship, including a major aircraft purchase deal in 2019.
White House and Defense Department Positions
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that any gift from a foreign government would comply with legal standards and transparency requirements. Ali Al-Ansari, Qatar’s Media Attaché to the US, confirmed that the ministries of defense from both countries are still reviewing the matter.
Security and Customization Required
The aircraft would require retrofitting and security clearance before presidential use. The current Air Force One planes are equipped with advanced communications systems, a stateroom, office, and meeting space. The proposed 747-8 offers more modern amenities but would need upgrades for official service.
Boeing Delays and Alternative Options
Trump criticized Boeing earlier this year for delays in delivering two contracted 747-8 planes. These aircraft, initially negotiated during his first term, are now expected to be delivered no earlier than 2027 or 2028. Trump hinted at acquiring an alternative aircraft in the interim.Precedents and Ethical Concerns
Critics have raised questions about the ethical and legal implications of a foreign-sourced presidential aircraft. Historically, only the Reagan Library possesses an Air Force One plane, which had served seven presidents. Qatar has gifted aircraft before, such as a luxury plane to Turkey in 2018.
