Indian Railways has rolled out special provisions to improve travel accessibility for vulnerable passengers. Lower berths are now prioritized for senior citizens, women aged 45 and above, and people with disabilities across various travel classes, ensuring a more inclusive journey.

Lower Berths Allocation

In sleeper class coaches, six to seven lower berths are generally reserved, while Air-Conditioned 3 Tier (3AC) coaches allocate four to five lower berths. Air-Conditioned 2 Tier (2AC) coaches reserve three to four lower berths. The exact number may vary depending on the total coach configuration to enhance accessibility.

Automatic Allotment for Eligible Passengers

Senior citizens, women aged 45 and above, and pregnant women are automatically assigned lower berths during booking, subject to availability. This ensures that eligible passengers are not inconvenienced while traveling.

Reservation Quota for People with Disabilities

Indian Railways has established a reservation quota for people with disabilities across express trains, including premier services like Rajdhani and Shatabdi. The quota includes reserved berths in Sleeper Class, 3AC/3E, and Reserved Second Sitting (2S) or Air-Conditioned Chair Car (CC).

Vacant Lower Berths Preference

If any lower berths are available during the journey, preference will be given to women, senior citizens, and people with disabilities, ensuring they are prioritized for these spots.

Improved Station Facilities

To support easier boarding and deboarding, Indian Railways is enhancing station facilities, including the provision of wheelchairs, dedicated assistance counters, and ramps at major stations. These facilities are available to all passengers, regardless of fare concessions, making the services universally accessible.
