Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on a two-day official visit to Saudi Arabia, hosted by Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman (MBS). This marks Modi’s third visit to the Kingdom, and his first to Jeddah , the last Indian PM to visit the city was Indira Gandhi in 1982. The meeting is expected to focus on strengthening bilateral ties amid global economic uncertainty driven by new US tariffs.

Early Life and Education
Mohammed bin Salman was born on August 31, 1985, to King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud and Fahda bint Falah bin Sultan. Raised in Riyadh, he was recognized among the top-performing students in Saudi Arabia. He later earned a law degree from King Saud University and participated in multiple training programmes during his studies.
Early Career and Entry into Politics
After university, MBS launched various businesses and engaged in public service roles. He served as secretary-general of the Riyadh Competitive Council and advised the King Abdulaziz Foundation. His formal political journey began in 2007 as an adviser to the Council of Ministers, and in 2009, he became special adviser to his father, then the governor of Riyadh.
Rise to Power
Mohammed bin Salman’s prominence rose rapidly after 2015 when he was appointed Defence Minister following his father’s ascension to the throne. In the same year, he was named Deputy Crown Prince and launched military operations in Yemen against Houthi rebels. By 2017, he became Crown Prince after his cousin Mohammed bin Nayef was removed. In 2022, he also took on the role of Prime Minister.
Vision 2030 and Domestic Reforms
MBS introduced Vision 2030 in 2016, aiming to diversify Saudi Arabia’s economy, reduce oil dependency, and position the country as a global investment and logistical hub. Key reforms under this vision include:
- Lifting the 35-year ban on cinemas in 2017
- Allowing women to drive for the first time in decades
- Expanding entertainment and social freedom for youth and families
- Enabling millions of women to join the workforce in diverse sectors
Personal Life
MBS married Princess Sarah bint Mashhoor bin Abdulaziz Al Saud in 2008, and the couple has five children.
Strategic Partnership with India
PM Modi’s visit is expected to reinforce cooperation in energy and investment. India’s foreign secretary hinted at the signing of multiple MoUs during the visit. The relationship between MBS and PM Modi has been marked by personal rapport and shared interest in economic modernization and strategic collaboration.
