The Maldives has imported five AJBAN 442A armoured military vehicles from the United Arab Emirates in a discreet deal that was only revealed when the vehicles were spotted being unloaded at Hulhulé Island. These vehicles were acquired for the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) and mark the latest step in the country’s growing military preparedness.

Series of Military Upgrades
The armoured vehicles add to a series of defence purchases made in recent years. Previously, the Maldives procured a missile launcher ship and Bayraktar TB2 drones from Turkey, the latter bought two years ago for $37 million. These upgrades have accelerated since President Mohammed Muizzu came to power, during which diplomatic ties between India and the Maldives have weakened.
Route and Deployment
The UAE-supplied vehicles were first transported to Sri Lanka and then shipped to the Maldives by Maldives State Shipping on April 9. Initially stationed at the MNDF headquarters in Hulhulé, the vehicles were moved to the capital Male on April 18. A video circulating online shows five tankers carrying the vehicles across the Sinamale Bridge.
Official Unveiling and Features
The AJBAN 442A armoured vehicles were officially presented during the MNDF’s 133rd anniversary parade held in Male on April 19. Manufactured by the UAE’s EDGE Group—a government-owned defence and technology firm—these tactical vehicles are valued at approximately 54 million Maldivian Rufiyaa.
Custom Modifications and Cost
Each vehicle features several enhancements including a remote weapons station, added armour, a roof hatch, and additional weaponry. With these modifications, the estimated cost per vehicle stands at $700,000. Experts suggest these changes are intended to increase the vehicles’ combat readiness and operational versatility.
