The ropeway project connecting Sonprayag, Gaurikund, and Kedarnath will generate income for the government without any upfront investment. Adani Enterprises, the selected bidder, has proposed a revenue-sharing model, offering nearly 42% of earnings to the National Highway Logistics Management Ltd (NHLML), the agency overseeing such infrastructure projects across India.

Massive Time Savings for Pilgrims

The 13-kilometre ropeway is expected to significantly reduce travel time for pilgrims—from the current 8–9 hours by foot or mule to just 36 minutes by cable car. This efficiency is expected to attract a high number of visitors, adding to the revenue potential. Out of the four final bidders, three had proposed revenue-sharing models, reflecting strong commercial interest in the project.

Project Approved Under PPP Mode

The Rs 4,081 crore ropeway will be developed under the public-private partnership (PPP) model. The Cabinet has already approved the project, and this is the third bidding round after the previous two were cancelled due to issues in the tendering process. Improvements were made before inviting fresh bids.

Capacity and Technology

Designed to handle 18,000 passengers daily—around 32 lakh per year—the ropeway will use Tri-cable Detachable Gondola (3S) technology. Each gondola will accommodate 36 passengers. The Kedarnath temple typically remains open for six months annually, making efficient transport essential during the pilgrimage season.

Project Timeline and Operations

Construction is expected to be completed within six years. Once operational, Adani Enterprises will have the right to run, maintain, and collect fare from the ropeway for 35 years.

Related Developments in Uttarakhand

Another major ropeway project is also in progress. Financial bids for the 12.4-kilometre Govindghat–Ghangaria–Hemkund Sahib ropeway are set to open next week. Estimated at Rs 2,730 crore, this project will have a daily transport capacity of 11,000 passengers, further strengthening Uttarakhand’s spiritual and tourism infrastructure
