Construction has begun on a new expressway connecting Varanasi to Kolkata. The first phase, covering a 27-km stretch from Varanasi to Chainpur in Bihar’s Kaimur district, is currently underway. Land acquisition for this section has already been completed.

Expressway Structure and Route

The expressway will span approximately 610 to 690 kilometers and will be developed in 13 phases. The route will pass through four states—Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal—crossing a total of 18 districts. The goal is to significantly cut down the current 12–14 hour travel time between Varanasi and Kolkata to about 6–7 hours.

Districts Covered by the Expressway

  • Uttar Pradesh: Varanasi, Chandauli
  • Bihar: Bhabua, Sasaram, Aurangabad, Gaya
  • Jharkhand: Chatra, Hazaribagh, Ramgarh, Ranchi, Bokaro
  • West Bengal: Purulia, Bankura, Bishnupur, Panskura, Haldia, Diamond Harbour, Kolkata

High-Speed Travel and Connectivity

The expressway will support a maximum speed limit of 120 kmph, allowing for faster and smoother travel. This feature is expected to greatly enhance connectivity and promote trade and tourism between the states.

Cost and Greenfield Status

The project, developed under the Greenfield category, is expected to cost around ₹35,000 crore. West Bengal will have the longest stretch at approximately 323 km. The portions in other states include 169 km in Bihar, 196 km in Jharkhand, and 22 km in Uttar Pradesh.

Economic and Employment Impact

The expressway is set to boost regional economic activity by improving transport for agriculture, small businesses, and industries. Its construction will generate thousands of jobs, and post-completion, improved infrastructure will benefit lakhs of people with better access to cities and trade hubs.
