Kerala will be the first state to receive the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train, which will operate on the Thiruvananthapuram–Mangaluru route. This initiative is aimed at improving overnight train travel with upgraded passenger amenities and better connectivity. The rollout is part of Indian Railways’ strategic expansion through the Southern Railway zone.

Train Design and Features
The 16-coach sleeper train is being designed by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) and manufactured by Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML). It will include:
- Fully air-conditioned coaches
- Ergonomic sleeping berths
- Automatic doors
- GPS-enabled LED displays
- Dedicated reading lights
- Universal accessibility in toilets and berths
- Kavach automatic train protection system
The train will have a passenger capacity of approximately 1,128.

Production Status and Expansion Plans
While work on the Vande Bharat chair car variants (8, 16, and 20-coach models) is ongoing at ICF, 16 chair car units are currently being converted into sleeper coaches using 10 existing rakes. ICF has also received an additional order to manufacture 50 Vande Bharat Sleeper Trains, which are expected to be ready by 2026–27.
Onboard Services and Safety
The sleeper trains will include a modular pantry to improve catering efficiency. The Kavach safety system will be integrated for added security. Enhanced design and automation are expected to significantly improve passenger comfort and safety during long-distance travel.
Strategic Importance for Kerala
Kerala’s selection as the launch site reflects its rising importance in India’s transport development strategy. The Vande Bharat Sleeper Train is expected to set a new benchmark for high-speed, comfortable, and safe overnight rail journeys.
