In India, milk is an essential part of daily life, from the morning chai to the sweets enjoyed during festivals. But have you ever wondered which state leads in milk production? While many states contribute to the country’s milk supply, Uttar Pradesh stands out as the largest producer. The state produces an impressive 38.78 million tonnes of milk annually, amounting to over 1,062 lakh liters daily, as reported by Avnish Kumar Awasthi, an advisor to Uttar Pradesh’s Chief Minister.

Uttar Pradesh’s dairy sector is divided between the organized and unorganized sectors. The organized sector, which includes major dairy companies like Amul and Mother Dairy, handles around 91.78 lakh liters of milk per day. The unorganized sector, made up of small farmers, produces about 439.45 lakh liters daily, catering to local markets.

The state’s success is largely attributed to the strong support systems set up for dairy farmers, especially in rural areas. These efforts are part of a broader plan to boost sustainable agriculture and improve the lives of small-scale producers. Uttar Pradesh not only meets local milk demand but also has enough surplus to supply other states and even export.

Uttar Pradesh’s dominance in milk production significantly contributes to India’s position as a global leader in dairy. While other states like Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, and Punjab also play important roles, Uttar Pradesh remains the top producer, ensuring the country’s dairy self-sufficiency. The state’s future looks bright with modern dairy technologies, sustainable practices, and continued support for farmers, making it a key player in India’s dairy economy.
