According to reports, aerospace startup Sarla Aviation is set to begin electric air taxi operations in Bengaluru, with plans to expand to Mumbai and Delhi in the following months. The company aims to offer nationwide service by 2028.

Prototype Revealed, Gradual Workforce Expansion Underway
The company showcased its prototype air taxi, Shunya, at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo earlier this year. As per reports, Sarla Aviation has expanded its team from 20 to 47 employees since January 2025, with plans to reach a workforce of up to 120 by the end of the year.
Startup Receives $10 Million in Funding
Reports indicate Sarla Aviation has secured $10 million in Series A funding, led by Accel, with participation from key investors like Binny Bansal, Nikhil Kamath, and Sriharsha Majety. The startup reportedly remains financially stable and not in urgent need of further funding.

Focus on Local Manufacturing, But Imports May Be Required
According to company sources, Sarla Aviation intends to build the entire electric air taxi value chain within India. However, certain high-tech components may need to be imported to meet launch deadlines, though efforts will be made to manufacture most parts domestically.
Manufacturing First, Services Second

The company’s primary goal, according to its leadership, is to operate as a manufacturer rather than only a service provider. Sarla Aviation is reportedly open to supplying its electric aircraft to other operators in addition to running its own services.
Free Air Ambulance Service in Development
In addition to commercial services, the company has reportedly announced plans to offer a free air ambulance service in the future, with more details expected as the project progresses.

Policy Support and Market Growth
Government efforts to support the eVTOL sector include the Directorate General of Civil Aviation issuing airworthiness guidelines in 2023. Other players like IndiGo have also entered the space, placing orders for up to 200 air taxis with U.S.-based firm Archer Aviation, which plans to launch its Midnight model in 2026.
