A major infrastructure milestone is on the horizon as Karnataka’s longest cable-stayed bridge, stretching across the scenic backwaters of the Sharavathi River, nears completion. Connecting Ambaragodlu and Tumari in Sagar taluk, the much-anticipated bridge is expected to be inaugurated by the end of May or early June.

Spanning an impressive 2.44 kilometers, the bridge is in its final phase, with asphalting and painting work underway. Built at a cost of ₹423 crore, the project has been years in the making since its foundation stone was laid by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari in 2018. Efforts are currently being made to coordinate the minister’s presence for the grand opening.
A Game-Changer for Connectivity
For decades, people in the region relied on ferry services to cross the river, but that will soon be a thing of the past. The new bridge will drastically cut travel time, especially for residents of Tumari and pilgrims heading to the famous Sigandur Chowdeshwari Temple. Instead of taking an 80-kilometer road journey, commuters will now enjoy a much shorter and more direct route. Additionally, the bridge will improve connectivity between Sagar and Kollur in Udupi district.

Engineering Marvel
Unlike conventional bridges that require a large number of piers, this cable-stayed structure stands on just 17 piers and two abutments, making it both sturdy and efficient. Peer Pasha, the officer overseeing the project, emphasized that the design ensures high stability, allowing it to support heavy vehicles weighing up to 80 tonnes. Since construction vehicles have already been using the bridge, officials have deemed a separate trial run unnecessary.
Boost for Tourism
Apart from enhancing transportation, the project has also sparked interest in cruise tourism. Shivamogga MP B Y Raghavendra, who played a key role in securing funds for the bridge, revealed that plans are in motion to introduce cruise services on the Sharavathi backwaters. He expressed confidence that the central government would extend support to make this vision a reality.

With its combination of engineering brilliance and improved connectivity, the Sharavathi bridge is all set to transform travel in the region while opening doors for new tourism opportunities.
