With India aiming for a ₹20 trillion electric vehicle (EV) market by 2030, IIT Madras is playing a crucial role in accelerating the transition through multiple innovative projects. The institute’s Department of Engineering Design has taken up more than 15 initiatives focused on India-centric EV technologies, policy advocacy, safety enhancements, and skill development.

Comprehensive Approach to eMobility
The department has adopted a holistic, seven-pronged approach, encompassing:
- Developing world-class EV engineers through specialized courses and a dual-degree program.
- Offering certification courses and an M.Tech program for working professionals.
- Establishing a Centre of Excellence for Zero Emission Trucking, addressing industry and policy concerns.
- Collaborating with the Indian government and Tamil Nadu authorities on policy and infrastructure.
- Advancing research through six state-of-the-art laboratories dedicated to EV studies.
- Engaging with industry experts to ensure relevant, real-world applications.
- Conducting science-based research to drive future EV innovations.
A Holistic Perspective on EV Adoption

IIT Madras recognizes that eMobility success requires more than just advanced chargers, motors, or batteries. Their approach also includes energy management, policy frameworks, cost analysis, and adapting EV solutions to India’s unique conditions.
Professor Karthick Athmanathan emphasized the need for high-quality engineering tailored to India’s challenges. “We have secured funding from industry and philanthropic sources, but scaling up resources remains a challenge due to the rapid evolution of the EV sector,” he stated.
Building a Nationwide EV Ecosystem
Beyond research and technology, IIT Madras is also working on faculty development programs to train educators, expanding resources for nationwide skilling and testing, and fostering collaboration among industry leaders, academia, and the government.

“This is just the beginning,” said Professor C.S. Shankar Ram, Head of the Department of Engineering Design. “We aim to create a pan-India network that will drive the country’s eMobility transformation.”
With its groundbreaking projects and multidisciplinary approach, IIT Madras is set to be a key force in shaping India’s EV landscape, ensuring a sustainable and technologically advanced future.
