Mohanlal’s much-awaited sequel, L2: Empuraan, has set new benchmarks at the box office, becoming the fastest Malayalam film to surpass ₹100 crore globally in just two days. Directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran, the film is now the 10th Malayalam movie to achieve this milestone, overtaking Aadujeevitham—The Goat Life, which took nine days to hit the same mark.

Biggest Opening for a Malayalam Film
Empuraan shattered previous records for the biggest opening in Malayalam cinema, earning over three times more than Mohanlal’s Marakkar, which held the previous record with ₹20 crore worldwide. The film’s strong global performance even outshone Bollywood releases at the overseas box office.
Historic Box Office Numbers
On its opening day alone, Empuraan raked in ₹67.50 crore worldwide, surpassing Aadujeevitham’s first-weekend collection of ₹64.75 crore. The film’s UK opening was particularly impressive, earning £628K (₹7 crore), marking the highest first-day earnings for an Indian film in the region.

Kerala’s Biggest Opening Day Ever
Despite mixed reviews, Empuraan recorded a massive ₹14 crore opening in Kerala, breaking the state’s previous record held by Thalapathy Vijay’s Leo (₹12+ crore). In India, the film grossed ₹24.50 crore on Day 1, with a net earning of ₹21.5 crore. However, Day 2 saw a 45% drop, bringing its net earnings down to ₹11.75 crore across all languages.
Box Office Projections
Industry analysts predict Empuraan will become the fifth-highest-grossing Malayalam film by Saturday and could secure the second spot by Sunday. With the upcoming Eid holiday, the movie has a strong chance of surpassing Manjummel Boys (₹241 crore worldwide) to become the highest-grossing Malayalam film of all time within its first week.

About L2: Empuraan
The sequel continues the story of Mohanlal’s character, Stephen Nedumpally (aka Khureshi-Ab’raam), a powerful political figure navigating a world of intrigue and ambition. Written by Murali Gopy, the film boasts a stellar cast, including Manju Warrier, Tovino Thomas, Indrajith Sukumaran, Saniya Iyappan, and Arjun Das, along with Game of Thrones actor Jerome Flynn.
With record-breaking earnings and massive anticipation, L2: Empuraan is proving to be a game-changer for Malayalam cinema.
