The Indian government has initiated pilot projects under the National Green Hydrogen Mission to introduce hydrogen-fueled buses and trucks. Announced on March 3, 2025, this initiative aims to promote clean energy and sustainability in the logistics sector. A total of 37 hydrogen-powered vehicles, 15 fuel cell-based and 22 internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, will operate across 10 routes. Additionally, nine hydrogen refueling stations will be established.

Purpose of the Initiative
The mission’s primary goal is to test and expand the use of hydrogen as a fuel in commercial transport. The pilot projects will assess vehicle performance, safety, and infrastructure needs, ensuring a smooth transition toward hydrogen-powered mobility.

Industry Participation and Investment
Leading companies such as Tata Motors, Reliance Industries, NTPC, Ashok Leyland, HPCL, BPCL, and IOCL have been selected to implement the pilot projects. The government has allocated Rs 208 crore in financial support, with the program expected to be fully operational within 18-24 months.

Long-Term Vision
Launched on January 4, 2023, the National Green Hydrogen Mission has a budget of Rs 19,744 crore until the 2029-30 financial year. The initiative aims to reduce carbon emissions, lessen fossil fuel dependence, and position India as a global leader in green hydrogen technology.
