The Indian Army has signed a ₹197.35 crore contract with Ashok Leyland Defence Systems Ltd for 500 pre-fabricated short chassis buses. Designed for rugged mountainous terrains, these buses will improve the Army’s mobility and operational reach.

Advanced Features for Tough Terrains

Built with reinforced structures and modern safety features, these 4×2 configuration buses are powered by a 105 kW engine, capable of reaching speeds of 80 km/h. With a gross vehicle weight of 9,440 kg, they offer reliable performance in challenging environments while meeting the Army’s logistical needs.

Boosting Indigenous Defense Manufacturing

This procurement falls under the ‘Buy (Indian-IDDM)’ category, promoting Indigenous Design, Development, and Manufacturing (IDDM). Such initiatives play a vital role in strengthening domestic defense manufacturing and creating employment, in line with the ‘Aatmnirbhar Bharat’ (Self-Reliant India) vision.

Ashok Leyland’s Continued Role in Defense Logistics

Ashok Leyland has been a key partner in the Indian defense sector, previously securing ₹800 crore worth of orders for 4×4 and 6×6 logistics vehicles used for towing guns and transporting ammunition.

Part of a Larger Modernization Plan

This acquisition is part of the Indian Army’s ongoing modernization strategy, which includes artificial intelligence, robotics, and drone technology. The Army is focused on enhancing operational efficiency and adopting advanced warfare technologies to align with its Vision 2047 objectives.

Strengthening Defense Preparedness

The procurement of these 500 buses marks a strategic enhancement of the Army’s logistical and operational capabilities. This move not only boosts defense preparedness but also reinforces India’s push for self-reliance in defense manufacturing.
