India has achieved a significant milestone in space technology with the successful launch of ‘Nila’, the country’s first private payload hosting satellite. Developed by Hex20, a Technopark-based satellite manufacturing company in Kerala, ‘Nila’ represents a major step forward in India’s growing private space sector.

Seamless Launch and Deployment
After four months of development, ‘Nila’ was launched on March 15 at 12:13 PM IST aboard SpaceX’s Transporter-13 mission. The satellite, deployed by Berlin-based company Exolaunch, successfully separated from the launch vehicle at 1:07 PM IST. By March 16, Hex20’s satellite control center confirmed the reception of its first beacon signal, marking the mission’s success.
The satellite carries Hex20’s indigenous subsystems along with a payload from German space company DcubeD, designed for in-orbit demonstration. This mission aims to validate cutting-edge space technologies and strengthen India’s role in commercial space exploration.

Kerala’s Growing Role in Space Research
To ensure smooth operations, Hex20 has set up a ground station at Marian Engineering College, Menamkulam, Trivandrum. The project has also provided hands-on training to faculty and students, fostering local expertise in space technology.
In May 2023, Hex20 established a state-of-the-art research and development facility at Technopark to drive space innovation. The company has active collaborations with Australia, UAE, and Taiwan, working closely with ISRO’s domestic manufacturing network to contribute to national space missions.

Future Plans and Expansion
According to Hex20 Co-founder & Director M.B. Aravind, ‘Nila’ is just the beginning of an ambitious journey in private space exploration. With support from IN-SPACe (Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Center), the company is set to play a key role in future space missions.

Hex20 has plans to launch a 50-kg satellite aboard an ISRO launch vehicle by the end of next year. The company also aims to provide customizable satellite platforms, space-grade components, and advanced mission solutions. To support multiple satellite developments, expansion of laboratory facilities is also in progress.
With its focus on innovation, collaboration, and excellence, Hex20 is paving the way for India’s private sector participation in space exploration, reinforcing the country’s leadership in the global space industry.
