Saudi Arabia has officially launched the test run of its highly anticipated sea taxi service in Jeddah, marking a significant step toward enhancing maritime transportation. The project was inaugurated by Jeddah Mayor Saleh Al-Turki on March 6, in the presence of Deputy Minister of Transport and Logistics, Rumaih Al-Rumaih, along with other government officials.

Key Routes and Operations
The initial phase of the sea taxi service will connect three major locations:
- Jeddah Yacht Club
- Al-Balad Historic District
- Sharm Obhur District
Two boats are currently in operation—one with a seating capacity of 94 passengers and another accommodating 55. The service operates daily during Ramadan from 3:30 PM to 1:30 AM. Ticket prices range from SR25 to SR50, while children can travel for free. The boats also include designated access points for passengers with disabilities, with space for up to four wheelchairs.
Booking and Accessibility
Passengers can book tickets conveniently via the Jeddah Transport Company app, ensuring a seamless travel experience. The introduction of the sea taxi is part of Saudi Arabia’s broader strategy to improve transportation infrastructure under Vision 2030.
Strategic Importance and Future Prospects
Jeddah Mayor Saleh Al-Turki highlighted the sea taxi as a crucial development for the city’s tourism and maritime transport sector. Jeddah Transport Company CEO, Eng. Yousef Al-Sayegh, emphasized that the project will provide a safe, efficient, and modern maritime travel option, improving overall quality of life in Jeddah.
Project Timeline and Investment
First announced in October 2017, the sea taxi project has been in development for several years. In 2019, Saudi newspaper Al-Watan reported that the project’s estimated cost was 36 million Saudi riyals. With its launch, the service is expected to play a key role in transforming Jeddah’s waterfront transportation system.
This initiative is a major step toward enhancing mobility and connectivity in Jeddah, providing residents and tourists with a fast, scenic, and eco-friendly transport alternative.
