Tata Motors has launched India’s first trials of hydrogen-powered heavy-duty trucks. Over the next 24 months, 16 advanced hydrogen-powered vehicles with different configurations and payload capacities will be tested on major freight routes, including Mumbai, Pune, Delhi-NCR, Surat, Vadodara, Jamshedpur, and Kalinganagar. These trucks will feature Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engines (H2-ICE) and Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (H2-FCEV) technology.

Government Support for Hydrogen Mobility
The trial was inaugurated by Union Ministers Nitin Gadkari and Pralhad Joshi. Gadkari emphasized hydrogen’s role in transforming India’s transport sector by cutting emissions and enhancing energy self-reliance. Joshi highlighted the trial as a crucial step in the National Green Hydrogen Mission, supporting India’s goal of zero-carbon mobility.

Tata Motors’ Commitment to Sustainability
Girish Wagh, Executive Director at Tata Motors, expressed the company’s dedication to innovation and sustainability. He stated that Tata Motors is leading India’s transition to cleaner transportation and remains committed to developing zero-emission solutions for long-haul freight.
Hydrogen Truck Features and Performance

The trial includes multiple truck models, such as the Tata Prima H.55S (available in both H2-ICE and H2-FCEV versions) and the Tata Prima H.28, an advanced H2-ICE truck. With operational ranges of 300-500 km, these vehicles offer cost-efficient, high-performance transport solutions. They also feature the premium Prima cabin and driver-assist safety technologies to enhance comfort and efficiency.
Part of India’s Green Energy Mission
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has awarded Tata Motors the contract for these trials under the National Green Hydrogen Mission. Tata Motors continues to invest in alternative fuel technologies, including battery electric, CNG, LNG, hydrogen combustion, and hydrogen fuel cell solutions.
