Volvo Trucks has launched India’s first ‘Road Train’ system, implemented by Delhivery Ltd. This revolutionary transportation solution, inaugurated in Nagpur on February 15, 2025, by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, is set to transform long-haul logistics with increased efficiency and cargo capacity.

What is the Road Train System?

The ‘Road Train’ system consists of a tractor pulling multiple trailers, extending up to 25.25 meters. Volvo’s Road Train features the FM 420 4×2 tractor unit, a 24-foot intermediate trailer, and a 44-foot semi-trailer. This innovative setup increases cargo capacity by 50%, reaching 144 cubic meters compared to conventional semi-trailers.

Advanced Safety and Performance Features

Volvo has integrated cutting-edge technology to enhance the Road Train’s safety and performance. Key features include:

  • Electronic Braking System (EBS) and Electronic Stability Program (ESP) for better control.
  • 360-degree camera system for complete vehicle surveillance.
  • Self-steering axle to improve maneuverability.
  • Dashboard load monitor and downhill cruise control for safer driving on slopes.
  • Stretch brake system to maintain stability in extended configurations.

Certified and Ready for Deployment

After undergoing rigorous testing, the Road Train has been certified by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) and the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI). Initially, it will operate between Delhivery’s major hubs in Nagpur and Bhiwandi, paving the way for wider adoption across India’s expressways.

A Game-Changer for Indian Logistics

Volvo’s Road Train system is expected to set new benchmarks in cargo handling, efficiency, and safety in the logistics sector. With enhanced capacity and technological advancements, this initiative marks a significant step forward in modernizing India’s transportation industry.
