To make long-distance travel more affordable and comfortable for commuters, the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) is set to introduce air-conditioned sleeper buses on high-demand inter-state routes, which are currently dominated by private operators. This initiative aims to offer a better and more cost-effective alternative for commuters.

New Routes for AC Sleeper Buses
The AC sleeper buses will initially operate on high-demand routes like Thalassery-Bengaluru and Thiruvananthapuram-Bengaluru. Transport Minister K B Ganesh Kumar highlighted that these buses would provide relief to passengers who currently pay high fares to private operators enjoying a monopoly. The tender process for the sleeper buses has already been initiated, with services expected to start once the buses are delivered.
Specifications and Requirements for the Buses

KSRTC has floated tenders for the design, manufacture, and supply of 34 new AC sleeper buses. The buses will be 13.5 meters long and diesel-powered, designed for a daily operation of 16 to 20 hours across various terrains and operating conditions. This move is part of the larger plan to modernize KSRTC’s fleet and provide better services for passengers.
Budget Allocation to Enhance KSRTC Fleet
A dedicated budget of Rs 107 crore has been allocated for purchasing new buses, which will be used to replace old vehicles in both higher-class and ordinary categories. The focus will be on upgrading the Super Fast buses, as they generate more revenue. Additionally, all Super Fast buses will be converted to air-conditioned models without increasing fares, which is expected to boost ridership and improve customer satisfaction.
AC Semi-Sleeper Buses to Connect Airports
As part of its expansion, KSRTC will also deploy AC semi-sleeper buses to provide connectivity to airports. Initially, these buses will operate from Kochi airport, with plans to expand the service to other airports in the state. These buses will not have fixed departure times but will leave only after the arrival of flights, offering greater flexibility for passengers.

Night Connectivity to Airports
Currently, there is no night connectivity to airports, but with the introduction of these AC sleeper buses, passengers will have the option to travel comfortably at night. The buses will have ample luggage space, making them an ideal choice for air travelers. KSRTC is also planning to order 30 new buses with extra luggage space, based on the model of the recently introduced premium superclass buses.
Expanding Services to Key Destinations
The new services will initially focus on destinations in Malabar and central Kerala, including cities like Kottayam, Thiruvalla, and Pathanamthitta. As soon as the buses arrive, they will start operating from Kochi airport, with plans to expand to other key locations.

With the introduction of AC sleeper and semi-sleeper buses, KSRTC is taking a significant step toward enhancing the comfort and affordability of long-distance travel. This expansion, coupled with the new airport connectivity services, promises to provide a more convenient, budget-friendly, and sustainable travel option for commuters across the state.
