Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, is looking beyond screens. After revolutionizing AI with ChatGPT, he is now working on an AI-powered device designed to replace smartphones. To bring this vision to life, he is considering a partnership with Jony Ive, the legendary former chief design officer at Apple, known for shaping the iPhone, iMac, and iPad.

A Potential iPhone Successor

Altman believes this AI-driven device could be the most significant leap in consumer technology since the iPhone. Unlike traditional smartphones with screens, apps, and keyboards, this device would enable a more natural, AI-first interaction. Though details remain undisclosed, it is expected to use advanced AI to seamlessly integrate into daily life.

OpenAI’s Bigger Play

Beyond hardware, OpenAI is making strategic moves to dominate the AI industry. The company is investing $500 billion in AI infrastructure through its Stargate initiative, backed by SoftBank and Oracle. This project aims to develop advanced data centers, ensuring OpenAI maintains its edge in AI development.

Additionally, OpenAI is exploring semiconductor manufacturing, aiming to reduce its reliance on Nvidia. By developing its own AI chips, the company seeks to optimize performance and lower costs, following the path of tech giants like Apple and Google.

Japan’s Role in OpenAI’s Expansion

During a recent visit to Japan, Altman discussed potential collaborations in semiconductor development and AI infrastructure. Japan’s expertise in chip manufacturing could play a crucial role in OpenAI’s growth, especially as global AI competition intensifies.

The Future of AI-Driven Devices

Altman’s vision extends beyond software—he wants AI to be an integral part of everyday interactions. If successful, OpenAI could usher in a new era of personal technology, where AI replaces traditional smartphones and redefines how people engage with digital experiences.
