Dubai has partnered with Elon Musk’s Boring Company to develop the ‘Dubai Loop,’ an underground transportation system aimed at connecting the city’s busiest areas. The announcement was made at the World Governments Summit by Omar Sultan Al Olama, the UAE Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy, and Remote Work Applications.

A Seamless Transportation Experience
Al Olama explained the Dubai Loop will cover the most densely populated parts of the city, enabling people to travel quickly and efficiently from one point to another. The goal is to make commuting easier and change the daily lives of residents and visitors.
Musk’s Vision: Wormhole-like Travel
Elon Musk, speaking virtually at the summit, described the Dubai Loop as a ‘wormhole-like’ experience. He compared the underground transport to a tunnel system where travelers can instantly move between parts of the city. He emphasized the excitement people will feel once they try it, saying it will seem “so obvious” in hindsight but revolutionary when first experienced.

The Boring Company’s Role
Founded by Elon Musk in 2016, the Boring Company is dedicated to solving urban traffic problems by creating underground transportation systems. It specializes in building fast-to-dig, low-cost tunnels for various forms of transit, including cars and freight.
Will Dubai Follow the Las Vegas Model?
It’s unclear whether the Dubai Loop will resemble the Boring Company’s Las Vegas project, the LVCC Loop, which transports passengers through underground tunnels in Tesla Model 3 cars. The Las Vegas system serves the Convention Centre, and there’s potential for expansion across the city.
Addressing Safety Concerns: Earthquakes and Extreme Weather
One of the major questions regarding underground transport is safety, particularly in the event of earthquakes or extreme weather. Musk addressed this, explaining that tunnels offer protection during earthquakes, much like being in a submarine during a storm. He also pointed out that tunnels are immune to extreme weather conditions, such as sandstorms, which are common in the UAE, making underground travel a reliable option.
Tunnels: A Solution to Urban Congestion
Musk highlighted that cities are already “3D” with buildings going up, but roads remain “2D,” which leads to traffic. He believes that making transportation systems 3D—either with flying cars or underground tunnels—is essential. While flying cars face challenges like noise, safety risks, and weather dependence, underground systems eliminate these issues.

Expansion of the Loop System
The Boring Company has already proven the viability of the tunnel concept in Las Vegas, where the Loop system is expanding. Musk hinted at similar future expansions, with the Dubai Loop set to redefine urban transport by providing a quieter, more efficient, and weather-resistant alternative to surface roads.
Looking Ahead
Although specific details about the Dubai Loop’s timeline and routes are yet to be confirmed, the partnership with the Boring Company marks a significant move toward Dubai’s ambition to become a smarter, more connected city. The Dubai Loop promises to bring an innovative solution to urban mobility, setting the stage for future developments in city transport systems.
