Infosys Lays Off Freshers Over Assessment Failures

Freshers fail internal assessments after long wait, Infosys defends move, employee union raises concerns

Infosys has reportedly dismissed hundreds of freshers from its Mysuru campus after they failed internal assessments. While PTI reports the number to be around 300, other sources suggest the figure could be between 400 and 700. The IT company clarified that it terminated 300 trainees, all of whom were given three attempts to clear the evaluation test.

Freshers Faced Long Wait Before Onboarding

According to reports, the affected employees belong to the 2022 engineering batch. They had to wait nearly two years after receiving their offer letters before being onboarded in October 2024 with salaries ranging from ₹3.2 to ₹3.7 lakh per annum for system engineer roles.

Infosys Defends Its Hiring Process

Infosys responded to the allegations, stating that all freshers undergo rigorous foundational training at the Mysuru campus before taking internal assessments. The company emphasized that the three-attempt rule is clearly mentioned in employment contracts and has been in place for over two decades.

Employee Union Raises Concerns

The Nascent Information Technology Employees Senate (NITES) criticized the layoffs, arguing that the actual number of affected freshers was much higher. The union plans to file a formal complaint with the Ministry of Labour & Employment, demanding intervention.

Allegations of Intimidation

NITES also alleged that Infosys deployed bouncers and security personnel to intimidate employees during the layoff process. Additionally, some freshers were reportedly asked to sign “mutual separation” agreements, though this claim remains unverified.

Calls for Government Action

With growing concerns over job security, NITES has urged the Labour Ministry to take immediate action against Infosys, citing violations of the Industrial Disputes Act, 1947. The situation remains under scrutiny as affected employees seek justice.
