The Tamil Nadu Food Safety Department has canceled the license of Mariyappan Restaurant in Thoothukudi after it went viral on social media for selling biryani at just ₹20. Concerns over the quality and safety of such low-cost food prompted authorities to take action.

Complaints and Inspection Reveal Shocking Conditions

District Collector K. Ilambavathi received numerous complaints questioning how biryani could be sold so cheaply without compromising quality. Acting on these concerns, food safety officials inspected the restaurant and its kitchen. The findings were alarming, as the food was being prepared in extremely unhygienic conditions. Stray cats and dogs were freely roaming inside the kitchen, increasing the risk of contamination.

Health Risks of Consuming Cheap, Unhygienic Food

Eating food prepared in unsanitary conditions can lead to serious health problems. Contaminated food can carry harmful bacteria like Salmonella and E. coli, which cause food poisoning, diarrhea, vomiting, and stomach infections. If meat is not stored properly, it can develop toxins that lead to severe foodborne illnesses. Additionally, exposure to pests and stray animals in kitchens increases the risk of diseases spreading through food.

Concerns Over Meat Quality

Officials confirmed that the biryani contained chicken, but instead of proper cuts, the restaurant used minced meat of questionable quality. Poorly handled or low-grade meat can harbor bacteria and parasites that cause serious infections. Food safety officers collected samples for testing, and the results will determine if further legal action is required.

Meat Supplier Also Under Investigation

Authorities also inspected the shop that supplied meat to the restaurant to check for possible violations. If the supplier is found guilty of providing substandard or contaminated meat, they could also face strict action.

The Real Cost of Cheap Food

Low-priced food might seem like a great deal, but it often comes at the cost of health and safety. Restaurants that compromise on hygiene and ingredient quality to keep prices low put customers at risk of foodborne illnesses. It is crucial to ensure that food establishments maintain proper hygiene standards and source ingredients from reliable suppliers.
