Karnataka has emerged as India’s largest coconut producer, surpassing Kerala, which had held the top spot since 2016. According to the Coconut Development Board (CDB), Karnataka produced 595 crore coconuts in 2022-23, while Kerala followed with 563 crore.
Steady Growth in Karnataka’s Coconut Yield
CDB’s provisional data for the first half of 2023-24 shows Karnataka maintaining its lead with 726 crore coconuts, while Tamil Nadu (578 crore) pushed Kerala (564 crore) to third place. The official annual figures for 2023-24 are yet to be published.
Weekend Farming Boosts Production
Karnataka contributes 28.5% of India’s total coconut output, driven by a growing trend of ‘weekend agriculture.’ Many professionals in urban areas are engaging in coconut farming during weekends, particularly in Tumakuru, Hassan, and Mandya, which together produce over 80% of the state’s coconuts.
Scientific Farming Enhances Yields
Despite having less land under coconut cultivation than Kerala, Karnataka has focused on improving farming techniques. Regular training by CDB, agricultural universities, and research institutes has helped farmers adopt better practices, leading to higher yields.
Kerala’s Decline in Coconut Farming
In contrast, Kerala has seen a decline in production due to the rise of tourism, which has shifted focus away from agriculture. The trend is similar in the Andaman Islands, where tourism has impacted coconut cultivation.
Small Farmers Drive Karnataka’s Success
Karnataka’s growth in coconut production is largely credited to small-scale farmers. Despite the rise of sugarcane farming in Mandya, the district remains a significant contributor. The state has also overtaken Kerala in ball copra production, accounting for 72.8% of India’s total output.
